From Southyeasters
NOTES:
The SouthYeasters website uses a wiki to add text and images to the website.
The wiki allows all subscribed users to easily create and edit interlinked web pages via any web browser.
The Mailing List and the wiki are two separate entities.
You only have to subscribe to the mailing list once to get the mail sent to you.
To edit pages you have to have an account on the wiki.
Once your account has been set up, you have to be logged in to do any editing.
Wiki markup is used to edit these pages. You can also use HTML notation.
HOW TO UPDATE A PAGE
Contents |
[edit] Edit
To start editing a page click :
- Edit on the main menu to the left to edit the whole page, or
- Edit on the page to edit a specific subsection only.
[edit] Paragraphs
The wiki automatically creates a new paragraph when you press enter twice (blank line between paragraphs).
However, you will need to manually add a break <br> if you only press enter once.
Example:
Ingredients:<br>
5 kg crushed pale malt<br>
15 gr hops<br>
15 gr dry yeast<br>
etc.
[edit] Bold text
Surround the text with ''' (3 apostrophes in front and 3 behind text).
Example: '''sample text''' gives you: sample text
[edit] Italics
Surround the text with '' (2 apostrophes in front and 2 behind text).
Example: ''sample text'' gives you: sample text
[edit] Headings
The page contents (blue box on right) will automatically be updated as you add new heading levels.
[edit] Heading 1st level
Surround the text with === (3 equals signs in front and 3 behind text).
Example: ===heading===
[edit] Heading 2nd level
Surround the text with ==== (4 equals signs in front and 4 behind text).
Example: ====heading====
[edit] Links
[edit] External Link
Example: [http://www.southyeasters.co.za SouthYeasters Website]
gives you: SouthYeasters Website
Remember the http:// prefix.
After the .co.za or .com etc., with a space between, comes the text that the browser will display.
[edit] New Pages
Create an internal link.
Example: [New page name] gives you: [new page name]
The link to the new page will be red. The link will turn blue after some text has been placed on the page.
[edit] Uploading Images
The steps:
1. Upload the image.
2. Tell the wiki on what page to display the image (create a link to the image file).
Do this:
Go to > Toolbox (on the main menu on left)
Click on > Upload File.
Click on > browse to find the file on your computer hard drive.
When you have selected the file the name will appear in the Destination filename box (you do not have to add a Summary).
Click Upload File.
Notes: the wiki automatically capitalizes the first letter of the file when you upload it.
Smiley.jpg and Smiley.JPG is not the same file. Capitalization is very important when you type the names of files.
You cant have a blank space in the name. The wiki automatically puts an underscore in the file name.
Examples: smiley.jpg will be Smiley.jpg smiley.JPG will be Smiley.JPG my smiley.jpg will be My_smiley.jpg
Go to the page where you want the image to be displayed.
Click on Edit for that sub-section.
Place your cursor where you want to insert the image.
Make a link as follows:
[[image:Smiley.gif]] gives you:
Save the page
[edit] Uploading Files
The wiki is a direct publishing tool. Enhancements with images is permitted (.jpg, .gif., .png, .svg etc.) files, but you are not allowed to upload text (.doc, .exl, etc.) files. However, you may upload PDF files (.pdf) to publish documents for download.
The steps:
1. Upload the file.
2. Copy the location of the file.

Note: the wiki automatically capitalizes the first letter of the file when you upload it.
Click Upload File.
2. Copy the location of the file.
The wiki displays the image and a link below the image.
It gives the file an internal address that you will have to copy in order to display a link to it on your page.

http://www.southyeasters.co.za/images/b/b2/Test_page.pdf
Right click on the address and select copy link address. If you've already gone to another page, you can always go to My contributions to see a list of files / edits you have made.
